The Football Association of Maldives' (FAM) first Ordinary Congress after around three years has been scheduled for tonight.

Their latest budget that was passed in congress was in May 2023 during then-President Bassam Adeel Jaleel's term, with a budget of MVR 85 million.

Maldivian football fell on even harder times during that period. The association ground to a halt, with major financial cases coming to light that year. They are still working to overcome said hard times.

The police raided FAM's office upon allegations of fraud, corruption and money laundering. Bassam has since been convicted and imprisoned.

FAM invited the media to take part in tonight's congress.

As per the agenda that was sent to Mihaaru News, tonight's congress will prioritize audit reports for the last three years and the passing of this year's budget.

Points of importance within the agenda:

  • Passing of the agenda: The order of work to be completed by the congress
  • The President's Address: FAM President Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) addressing and speaking to congress members
  • The approval of previous minutes: The approval of the minutes from the Extraordinary Congress held on 26th July 2025
  • The 2025 report of activities: The submission of the 2025 activity report
  • Submission of financial statements: The submission of the 2025 balance sheet and the statement on the details of the profits and losses (this will include reports from independent auditors)
  • Passing of the audit report: The passing of the audit report prepared based off the 2025 financial report.
  • The passing of the 2026 budget

The congress will begin at 9:00pm.

Even though the Ordinary Congress has not been held for the last three years, there have been four Extraordinary Congresses that have been held by the association. Three of those were held during FAM's Normalization Committee. An Extraordinary Congress was held by FAM in early 2024 during then-President Bassam's term to create committees that have been left untouched for four years. However, the congress was not acknowledged, with the decisions made then being voided by FIFA.

This will be the first congress being held under Ahmed Thoriq's leadership after taking the seat of FAM's President for a second time on 26th July 2025.
