Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu has urged ExCo members to become even more aware and responsible in an effort to stop the misconduct and internal corruption of sports associations.
The ministry is currently looking into the embezzlement allegations against the Maldives Chess Association. The minister was questioned yesterday regarding the matter at the press conference that was held, with him stating that there is an ongoing investigation, limiting his ability to speak on it.
Subsequently, the minister said that association ExCo members have a set of responsibilities to uphold so that such instances may see a reduction.
"I ask the ExCo members to not stand by until the issues get out of hand. To hold regular meetings and be aware of what is going on especially in associations where such issues occur," said the minister.

Rafiu stated that such issues are brought to light only after things get out of hand.
"This comes to our attention when it is too late most of the time," said the minister.
However, Minister Rafiu said that with association ExCos upholding their responsibilities, these cases will be brought to the forefront of everyone's attention, facilitating a stoppage in such issues.
"With that, the chances of some association members straying from the right path will decrease. The path itself will narrow," said the minister while highlighting the importance of reporting such cases and bringing it to light by ExCo members.
Minister Rafiu continued by stating that sports has a noble purpose. It is an important resource that brings about peace within the community, said the minister.
