The Maldives women's national futsal team faced a challenging start in their history-making debut, suffering an 11-1 defeat against India in their first-ever international match.

This match, held today in Thailand, marked the opening of the inaugural SAFF Women's Futsal Championship organized by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).

While the women's division matches commenced today, the men's division competition is set to begin tomorrow.

In a dominant performance by India, Khushbu Saroj led the scoring with four goals, while Ritika Singh, Sonali Mondal, and Nishka Parkash each netted twice. The opening goal of the tournament for India was scored by Mithila Ramani.

Despite the scoreline, a point of historical significance for the Maldives arose concerning their lone goal. Maryam Noora took a shot that deflected off Indian defender Achom Degio before entering the net.

There is currently a disagreement between the football governing bodies of the two nations regarding the credit for this goal.

The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has officially attributed the goal to Noora, noting that replays suggest the contact with Achom’s foot was minimal and did not significantly alter the ball's speed or trajectory. Under standard football conventions, such a goal is typically credited to the attacking player.

However, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has claimed the goal as an own goal by Achom Degio.
