Maldivian taekwondo athlete Fathimath Ibrahim (Fathun) has clinched two gold medals at the International Open Championships held in Nepal this month.
Fathun secured gold in both the Poomsi (forms) category and the women’s under-57kg Kirugi (fighting) event. With these victories, she has qualified for next year’s Open Championship series in Australia. The tournament featured over 800 athletes from 11 countries competing across various categories.
This year has been a landmark year in Fathun’s career. In October, she represented the Maldives for the first time at the Taekwondo World Cup in China, becoming the first Maldivian athlete to compete on the global stage. Earlier, she won three medals at the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games in Madagascar.
Taekwondo is one of the youngest national sports associations in the Maldives. Officially launched in the country only a few years ago, Fathun began her journey in the sport in 2019.
