Sri Lanka has announced that the South Asian Super Cup, which was launched this year, will continue in 2026, with Maldives set to participate as the defending champions.

Speaking to PSM, Sri Lanka Football Association President Jaswar Umar said the tournament will again be held in Sri Lanka and is expected to feature more teams.

“Sri Lanka and Maldives will play. We are also planning to invite another country. It may become a four-nation tournament,” he said.

The South Asian Super Cup was held for the first time this year with the participation of Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bhutan. However, Bhutan was unable to travel for the matches, and the tournament was decided based on two matches between Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Maldives won the first match 3–0, while the second match ended in a 1–1 draw, giving Maldives a 4–1 aggregate victory and the title of the first-ever South Asian Super Cup champions.

While preparations are underway to host the Super Cup again next year, Sri Lanka is also scheduled to play at least 12 international matches in 2026.

Sri Lanka is currently coached by Abdullah Al Muthairi, who previously coached Nepal during the 2021 SAFF Championship held in Maldives. Al Muthairi has said the Sri Lankan team is working towards winning the next SAFF Championship.
