Each team playing in the FAM Women's League commenced yesterday is set to receive MVR 100,000 in financial assistance.
FAM said that the funds are being disbursed with the aid of FIFA. The MVR 600,000 package from FIFA is being distributed amongst the six teams.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino visited the Maldives in October on invitation from FAM President Ahmed Thoriq. During the visit, Infantino assured that full cooperation would be extended towards Maldives' efforts to revive football.
Women's League began yesterday, with the first match seeing Victory and TC play against each other.
This is the first time in ten years that FAM has held an 11-a-side tournament in women's football. They have, however, held mini football and 9-a-side tournaments.
Other teams in the league are 2015 champions New Radiant, Maziya, Odi and Bisburu.
FAM President Thoriq has previously announced that hereonwards, women's leagues will be held each season without interruption. FAM will continue efforts to increase the number of participating teams each year, with a premier division and lower division to be established.
The first match saw Victory win against TC with a 6-nil score. The Women's League was officially inaugurated by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
