President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated a new football stadium in Mandhoo, after youth on the island asked him to attend its opening and take part in a match.

President Muizzu travelled to Alifu Dhaalu atoll Mandhoo yesterday, accompanied by Vice President, Hussain Mohamed Latheef, as well as several ministers and senior officials.

The stadium was built after island youth asked President Muizzu during his visit on 8 October; part of his tour of all inhabited islands to ensure the pitch was completed by the end of the month.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) carried out the construction and installed the lights.

During his visit to Mandhoo last month, the youth also invited the President to open the stadium and join the inaugural match, saying they wished to give him the honour.

President Muizzu said he would try to make time in his schedule and hoped to play if possible.

A friendly match was held as part of yesterday's opening ceremony, with the President’s team defeating a Mandhoo side 6–2.
