The Freediving World Cup (FWC) 2025 saw Maldives' most accomplished freediver, Umair Badheeu set three new national records for his country, marking an incredible end to his 2025 season. The FWC was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from 15th October to 22nd October.
Umair set the following national records at the FWC while competing against some of the best athletes in the sport:
- Free Immersion (FIM): 72 metres – new record (previous record 68 metres, also held by Umair): Using the rope to descend and ascend without fins.
- Constant Weight No Fins (CNF): 47 metres – new record (previous record 42 metres, also held by Umair): Diving without the use of fins or using the performance rope.
- Constant Weight (CWT): 72 metres – new record: Diving with monofins or bifins.
“It’s been an incredible season, and I’m grateful to close it on such a high note. Each dive came with its own challenges, but they’ve helped me grow both physically and mentally. I’m looking forward to the next season and hope to push for even greater depths," said Umair, while thinking back on his performance at the FWC.
Umair has been partnered with Kaimoo Resorts and Hotels for the past three years as an ambassador, where they have been supporting his training and competitive goals.
“Umair continues to make the Maldives proud with his record-breaking performances,” said Mohamed Manih Ahmed, Managing Director of Kaimoo Resorts and Hotels. “His persistence, focus, and sportsmanship represent the best of Maldivian excellence. We are honoured to support his journey as he continues to elevate the Maldives on the global freediving stage.”
Umair also set three AIDA national records earlier this year at the Manado Depth Competition (MDC) 2025 organized by Apnea Murex, held in Indonesia from 1st August to 3rd August.
This year marked the third edition of the competition, with it being Indonesia's only international depth freediving competition.
Umair set the following national records while competing at the MDC:
- Free Immersion (FIM) – 68m: Diving by pulling on the rope to descend and ascend.
- Constant Weight No Fins (CNF) – 42m: A challenging discipline performed without the use of fins.
- Constant Weight Bifins (CWTB) – 68m: Diving with regular bifins.
At the time, his CNF record was his very first in that discipline, which he described as one of the most demanding ones.
“For this competition, my training was more focused on CNF since it’s a new discipline for me and one of the hardest,” he said.
Umair began his freediving journey in 2018 and started competing as an athlete in 2020 and is now the most accomplished freediver in Maldives, with him being a leading voice in the development of the sport in Maldives.
