President of FIFA Gianni Infantino will be making a one-day visit to Maldives on Friday.

FAM President Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) has confirmed this. FAM has not given any further details.

However, sources told Mihaaru News that Infantino will be meeting with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his visit. Infantino will also be holding a meeting with football stakeholders.

After arriving on a private jet on Friday, Infantino will be leaving that evening itself, as per sources.

This is the second time a President of FIFA has come to Maldives. Former President of FIFA Sepp Blatter had flown to Maldives for two days, with him flying to other countries as part of his visit to those affected by the 2006 tsunami. He met with then-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, with Blatter giving USD 2 million from FIFA to Maldives' Tsunami Recovery Program.

It is speculated that Infantino's visit to Maldives is an effort to strengthen their work in bringing Maldivian football back onto its feet. Corruption had spread through the FAM during former FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel's term (who is currently imprisoned), with Maldivian football coming to a halt.

Current FAM President Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) was elected to the post by FIFA's Normalization Committee.

Thoriq had recently visited Infantino at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. Infantino had praised Thoriq's work after the meeting. He also praised Maldives South Asian Cup win against Sri Lanka recently.

"I have no doubt that Thoriq will utilize his experience and vision as a former player to his post as FAM's President," said Infantino.
