National women’s volleyball team coach Sofwan Ahmed has been suspended from his post following allegations made against him.

According to Mihaaru News, Sofwan who also serves as a member of the Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) Executive Committee is accused of threatening a female player and attempting to engage in sexual relations with her.

VAM President Mohamed Latheef confirmed to Mihaaru News that the association’s executive committee initiated an investigation into the matter and decided to suspend Sofwan pending the outcome.

“Once the committee receives the report, we will know the full details of the matter and the action to be taken. The executive committee will decide,” Latheef said.

He noted that no formal complaint has been filed, but the association acted based on information received.

“Our committee received information, and the executive committee itself began investigating. He has been suspended from his post since the matter is currently under investigation,” he added.

Latheef emphasized that VAM is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all players, referees, and officials.

“My assurance to the male and female players, as well as referees and officials, is that there will be a safe environment. Our executive committee will take necessary action against anyone to maintain it—whether it’s a member of our executive committee or a coach,” he said.

VAM has appointed volleyball legend Ahmed Nadeem as the interim coach of the national women’s team.
