President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to developing football in the Maldives.
He made these remarks during a meeting with the national football team at Citron Restaurant.
“Football is a top priority. The government will support players in meeting their various needs and help them grow and progress. While other sports are also important, football will be given the highest priority,” President Muizzu said.
The meeting was attended by Sports Minister Abdullah Rafiu, Sports Commissioner Mohamed Tholal, Youth Minister Ibrahim Waheed, President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) Ahmed Thoriq (Tom), along with other agency officials and members of the national team.

Ahead of the upcoming Dhivehi Premier League break and the national team’s departure for the Asian Cup qualifier against Tajikistan next week, President Muizzu assured the team that the government will provide all necessary support for the match.
He also confirmed that players will receive government allowances.
Highlighting the importance of football, President Muizzu said that until a new high-quality stadium is built, Galolhu Stadium will be equipped with sufficient facilities to meet current needs.
He also congratulated the national team for winning the South Asian Super Cup in Sri Lanka last month, Maldives' first trophy in seven years.
Maldives will face Tajikistan in the Asian Cup on Thursday, followed by another qualifier against the same team two days later. The Maldives is in Group A, alongside Tajikistan, the Philippines, and Timor-Leste.
