Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has brought in four referees from Nepal to officiate in the Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League, which begins tonight after a two year suspension.

According to FAM, the referees include three FIFA-certified officials and one national-level referee, provided with the support of the All Nepal Football Association.

FAM said the decision was made to give Maldivian referees more time to prepare for the resumption of club football and to allow them to gain experience working alongside seasoned international referees.

“By working with experienced referees from abroad, our local referees will have the opportunity to enhance their skills and capacity,” FAM said in a statement.

FAM has previously brought in foreign referees for major matches such as finals. The association said it will also roll out new training and development programs for referees with the start of the new season.
