All board members of Victory Sports Club, except President Hussain Adam, have resigned to make way for fresh elections.
The board, elected in 2022, stepped down before the end of its four-year term to hand over responsibility to new members, according to one of the outgoing officials.
He said dissatisfaction arose after Victory withdrew from the League Cup football tournament earlier this year, despite having applied to take part. The competition, organised by the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), was held in April and May.
“There was disagreement among some members about the decision. That should not happen in a sports club. Victory is supposed to compete in every tournament at every opportunity,” he said.
The official added that the resignations were also prompted by difficulties in raising funds after a key investor pulled out.
The outgoing board had been credited with helping revive the club, which was suspended by FAM in 2019 for failing to pay players’ salaries. Under their tenure, Victory returned to the first division and assembled a squad for the upcoming season.
The former board member said they were leaving the club debt-free.
“There will be no unpaid salary for a player. I hope the next board will maintain Victory that way,” he said.
Victory’s general secretary, Ibrahim Rameez, has also stepped down.
