Volleyball, the most popular sport in Vaavu Atoll, will take center stage as the Vaavu Atoll Volleyball Tournament kicks off on August 15 in Felidhoo.
Felidhoo was chosen as the host island due to its favorable weather conditions.
“The matches will be played in the best possible conditions at the Felidhoo court,” said Vaavu atoll Councill President Shujau Ali.
The tournament will feature four men’s teams and three women’s teams from different islands. Each team is allowed to include two players from outside the atoll, and has the option to field two foreign players as well.
The atoll is known for producing top national players, including Ali Huzam (Huzante), his brother Hassan Nilam, and popular player Hussain Visham (‘Bulhikey’), all from Fulidhoo. Shujau noted that many national-level players will take part in the tournament.
The champion teams in both the men's and women’s divisions will receive MVR 30,000, while the runner-up teams will receive MVR 15,000, as set by the Vaavu Atoll Council. The tournament will conclude on August 24.
