Two Maldivian swimmers who are currently competing at the World Aquatics Championship - Singapore 2025, Meral Ayn Latheef and Amna Thazkiya Mirsad (Thazky) have set national records for the long course category.

Meral set the national record for the women's 200-metre individual medley event, with Thazkiya setting the national record for the women's 100-metre backstroke event, both in the long course category.

Meral set a time of 02:44:34 on the first day of the world championship. Her previous record was set earlier this year at UK's Devon County Championship with a time of 02:45:93.

Meral set a new record in a championship competition last year as well. However, Thazkiya broke that record at last years Sri Lankan National and Junior National Long Course Swimming Championship.

Thazkiya's record: A future full of potential

Thazkiya broke Hamna Ahmed's 2023 record with her own time of 1:13:49 just yesterday at the heat backstroke event in Singapore.

The 14-year-olds record is 4.2 seconds faster than Hamna's.

Hamna set a new record last year at the 59th MILO/MAS Malaysia Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship heat with a time of 01:17:69. Hamna beat Aishath Sausan's record with her own time of 01:18:17 the year before that. Sausan's record was set at the 19th FINA World Championship with a time of 01:18:58.

Thazkiya's current time however, is five seconds ahead of previous swimmers.

Maldivian swimmers Mohamed Aan Hussain and Mohamed Rihan Shiham are also competing in the World Aquatics Championship.
