Returning as president of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), former national striker Ahmed Thoriq has pledged to restore the sport’s credibility and reach across the country.
Thoriq’s first term ended abruptly earlier this year when five executive committee members resigned, dissolving the exco. Now back in office, he says he’s learned from the setbacks and is committed to restructuring the FAM.
“Football has lost ground, especially in the provinces,” Thorig said, outlining plans to divide the country into four zones and bring structured tournaments to the islands. He also emphasized making football and beach soccer accessible even in smaller communities.
With limited access to training grounds and turf fields, Thoriq announced plans to build a full-sized turf stadium in Hulhumalé and seek government support to renovate deteriorating pitches at Maafannu Stadium.

FAM remains under FIFA oversight following corruption scandals under previous leadership. German advisory firm Ankura continues to monitor all financial activity, including minor purchases. Thorig supports this transparency and says his team will implement a system to make FAM’s finances fully public.
“We’re starting from scratch—but this time, with clear direction,” he said.
