The Maldives Women's National Football team has suffered defeat in the qualifying round of the AFC Asian Cup yesterday. Guam came out victorious with a 3-0 win.

Guam, known to have an international ranking of 97, scored their first goal of the match within the final minute of the first half. The second and third goals were scored at the 56th minute and 75th minute respectively, both scored by Rebecca Bartosh.

Maldivian goalkeeper Aminath Leeza denied 10 goal scoring attempts from Guam within their 26 corner kick attempts.

Maldives, with an international ranking of 163, also suffered defeat at the hands of group favorites Vietnam, with a score of 7-0. Vietnam has claimed victory against Maldives in the past as well, during the qualifying rounds of the 2021 Asian Cup with an end result of 16-0. The Vietnamese team of 2021 was the same team that partook in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Vietnam has also claimed victory against group-opponent UAE, with a final score of 6-0. Vietnam currently leads the group with 6 points, Guam is second with four points and with UAE claiming one point.

Maldives will be facing off against UAE in their final match this coming Saturday on 5th July 2025.

Mohamed Athif (Athi) is the coach for the Maldives Women's National Football team, who has played the role of coach previously as well. He came into the position in May 2025.

It was decided in last week's FAM's Congressional Hearing that the ExCo that is to be chosen in the upcoming 26th July 2025 election is to come up with a framework for a women's football tournament in Maldives. The framework is to be presented to the congress for approval within a year of the ExCo being appointed.
