Defending champions HDC opened their campaign in the men’s division final of the VAM Association Cup with a straight-sets victory over Blues for Volleyball on Wednesday evening.
Playing at the Social Centre’s indoor court, HDC secured the win 28-26, 25-15, 25-25. Shamaail Hussain of HDC was named player of the match.
The final round of the tournament features eight teams divided into two groups. In Group A, both HDC and Blues for Volleyball registered wins against Huraa Community Club and Sports Club City respectively.
Huraa Community Club cruised to victory in their match, defeating Sports Club City in straight sets; 25-11, 25-17, 25-21, with Ishan Mohamed (Batis) earning player of the match.
HDC are the reigning champions, having defeated Dhivehi Sifainge Club in last year’s final.
The first match of this year’s tournament saw Dhandimagu Sports and Recreation Club beat Dhivehi Sifainge Club in Group B, with scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-21. Despite the loss, Dhivehi Sifainge Club’s Luis Felipe Ferreira Perrotto was named player of the match.
Group B action continues today, with Police Club set to face Dhandimagu, and Southern Sports Club playing against Dhivehi Sifainge Club tonight.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for this year’s National League. Additionally, the winner of a play-off between the third-placed teams from both groups will also secure a spot in the league.
