Maldivian tennis team to return home after tournament in Jordan cancelled due to regional conflict.
A junior tennis tournament in Jordan has been cancelled amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, prompting the Maldivian team to return home on Friday.
The five-player squad, accompanied by their parents, arrived in Jordan on the night of 12 June. However, hostilities began the following morning, forcing the cancellation of the event.
A parent of one of the players told Mihaaru News that the situation in Jordan was tense and far from normal due to the conflict.
“We came here on the night of June 12, and the fighting started on the morning of the 13th,” the parent said.
Missile exchanges between Israel and Iran were taking place across Jordanian airspace.
Jordan is geographically located between Israel and Iran.
The parent said that the team unable to leave at first. However, flights have now been arranged, and the group is expected to arrive in the Maldives on Friday.
“We hope the flight will not be cancelled,” the parent added.
The conflict intensified after Israel launched an attack on Iran last Friday, triggering a broader exchange of missile strikes and instability in the region.
