The Maldives Sports Corporation has been officially dissolved following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's ratification of the first amendment to the Sports Act.
Established in 2016 under the original Sports Act, the Corporation was tasked with developing sports facilities and generating profit through their commercial use.
However, its role often overlapped with that of the Sports Ministry, leading to confusion and inefficiencies. Former Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof had previously called for the Corporation's dissolution during the MDP government.
Under the new law, the Sports Fund, a legally mandated entity will assume responsibility for the development, management, and investment in sports, athletes, and sporting facilities. The Fund is designed to function with greater autonomy and legal authority than the commission, and is expected to play a key role in supporting the newly decentralized sports system.
Speaking at a ceremony at the President’s Office, President Muizzu said the government would provide new opportunities for employees affected by the dissolution.
He added that the absence of the Corporation would not hinder the development of infrastructure, which remains a government priority.
The decentralisation of sports management will require significant resources, PresidentMuizzu said.
The Sports Fund will have a crucial role in ensuring that infrastructure reaches every corner of the country, he added.
President Muizzu said that the current and future national budgets would include allocations for these developments, with some projects already underway at the initial stages.
