The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has announced the decision to reschedule the election to January 31 to elect its new President.

The current term of FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel has six months remaining before it is due to conclude.

The decision to expedite the election was made at the latest executive committee meeting of the association.

FAM Secretary General Mohamed Jaushan Shareef informed the association's media group that the executive committee has decided to hold the election within 45 days. Jaushan further stated that interested parties are welcome to apply for the position before 2:00 p.m. on December 27.

After sharing the announcement, Jaushan deleted it and later responded that it was removed to make an amendment to it.

In the announcement, Jaushan further highlighted that an FAM electoral committee would be responsible with the proceedings of the election according to the association's general regulations.

While FAM has announced its decision to expedite the election, several football clubs have already begun seeking signatures for a petition of no-confidence against Bassam.

Former FAM President and Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq, who previously announced his decision to contend for the president's spot in the upcoming FAM election, confirmed launching efforts to collect signatures against Bassam.
