The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has pledged a disbursement of USD 300,000 to the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), conditioning exclusively to use the money to pay FAM's staff.
Out of the pledged total, FIFA has already deposited USD 100,000 to FAM's account for the conditioned purpose.
Newly appointed General Secretary of FAM Mohamed Jaushan Shareef notified FIFA's payment would be deposited in three stages, with the first disbursement of USD 100,000 out of the three already deposited.
Jaushan further said that the money would be exchanged into Maldivian Rufiyaa directly through the bank without seeking a third-party exchanger. The FAM SG further said that the payroll for the association's staff has already been processed and submitted to the bank to credit salaries.
"The process would move ahead through the bank, we requested the bank to credit the salaries into the staff account after exchanging it into Maldivian currency," Jaushan confirmed while speaking with Mihaaru News.
Due to the explicit condition by FIFA, Jaushan further noted that the international federation would not disburse the second payment unless FAM presents documented proof of salary deposits for the staff.
"The disbursement of USD 100,000 would not be sufficient to pay the staff for their entire outstanding remuneration total, but with the sum total of USD 300,000 we can pay them completely, God willing," Jaushan said.
Amid growing public criticism and media scrutiny towards the debt and scandal riddled association, FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel had met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino earlier in October for discussions.
