A mother and her newborn child have passed away after a caesarian operation in Gaafu Alif atoll Vilin'gili last night.

The family alleges that the two died due to delays in providing transfer to capital Male' city and necessary treatment after complications that arose during the caesarian section.

The mother, Shiuna Mujuthaba, 35, 8 months pregnant, was admitted in GA. Vilin'gili hospital a couple of nights ago after she experienced difficulty in breathing. As her condition worsened, a caesarian section was conducted. She passed away about ten hours after the surgery.

Shiuna passed away while waiting at the Kooddoo Airport runaway to leave to Male' for further treatment. The infant died after being brought to Male'.

A close friend of Shiuna told Mihaaru News that Shiuna had gone to the hospital two days ago to consult a gynaecologist for a routine check up. She had been suffering from a cold from the day before, but there were no additional issues, the friend said. However, the gynaecologist had advised Shiuna to see a physician.

She was later admitted in hospital due to breathing difficulties, she said, adding that Shiuna had been bracing against something, straining to breathe, even when she visited her at the hospital yesterday.

She collapsed, with family catching her, after she complained of breathing troubles.

"'I am dying, I cannot breathe, my chest hurts, I'm dying', she was crying this out as she fell back on the bed and that is when the nurses began work," said the friend, who had been at the hospital at the time.

She claims that the internal medicine doctor that Shiuna had seen did not refer to the gynaecologist even when all this happened, nor was the gynaecologist made aware of Shiuna's condition.

Shiuna was then placed on ventilator support and treated. It was after this that the gynaecologist was called in.

She said that the gynaecologist had voiced concerns that the hospital lacks a neonatal ICU to place the infant in. Due to this, the c-section was conducted after a paediatrician from GDh. Thinadhoo Regional Hospital was brought to the island.

"All that time they were saying the flight is coming, Aasandha has been arranged, the flight is coming. Since she was taken in, from 4pm yesterday, that's what they were saying," the friend said.

She claims that after the emergency flight was arranged, it was postponed multiple times due to information being given from the hospital. However, after repeated complaints, the flight was brought and Shiuna was taken to the airport. However, there were no means of providing oxygen while she was taken to the airport.

"There is nothing here. Sea ambulance made about 50 trips between here and Kooddoo last night. So whose negligence is this? She died and was taken back to the hospital at 2.15am last night," she said.

The air ambulance was first arranged at 7pm last night, Mihaaru News reports. However, the flight was later cancelled when they received reports that the patient's condition was stable. The air ambulance flight was arranged again later when the condition worsened.

Shiuna is survived by her two children, ages 13 and 8.

Shiuna's death caused grief and anger on the island, with some resorting to threats against the internal medicine doctor, who has since left the island with their family.
