Customs and good values of the Maldivian people are fading due to the growing influence of politics in the country, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today.
Speaking to residents of Mahibadhoo during his tour of islands in Alifu Dhaalu atoll, President Muizzu siad that development is not limited to infrastructure but must also include intellectual and human growth.
The President expressed concern over the erosion of morals and Islamic principles, which he said are increasingly disappearing.
“There is a lot of loss among us, especially in recent times. As the political arena expands and becomes polluted, we are losing many good habits, even if not intentionally,” he said.
“We must restore those things. Without them, there is no country. We need to respect one another and speak kindly. Restoring these values is necessary,” he added.
President Muizzu also highlighted the government's efforts to address the rise of vaping among school students, as well as initiatives to protect youth from drugs and gang involvement.
With the amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, the sale and trade of vape products have been officially banned in the Maldives, effective today.
