Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Art has released a statement clarifying that there was no government involvement in an individual participating in the Miss Universe contest.

In the statement, they said that participation in the pageant is being led by a private individual with no involvement or approval from the government, and issued a call for non-participation.

The statement further said that the government does not endorse holding of, or participation in, contests such as these which contravene the religion and culture of Maldives.

They urged to not spread information which implies that the government is backing participation in such a contest.

Top Model Maldives winner, 21 year old Mariyam Shaina Naseem is participating in the Miss Universe competition which will be held in Mexico this November.

The opportunity to participate was presented by event management company, He n She Maldives, which also brought the Top Model franchise to Maldives.
