Kings Capitals Issue: Alhan and brothers to request charges be reviewed

Alhan Fahumy and his two brothers have decided to request the Prosecutor General’s Office to review the decision to charge them for allegedly scamming multiple people out of money via a scheme introduced by their company Kings Capitals.

In the case, the State is levelling a total of 13 scam charges against Alhan and his two brothers Shazbaan Fahumy and Shahubaan Fahumy.

At the trial hearing today, the brothers' defence counsel said they intend to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Prosecutor General's Office, which allows the public to request a review of criminal charges.

Based on this, the lawyer requested to adjourn the trial until a decision is made by the Prosecutor General's Office.

However, Judge Ismail Shafiu said the trial would continue until the State decides to withdraw the charges, and denied the request.

The judge also pointed out that although former Attorney General Azima Shakoor submitted a form requesting to be put on as a defence lawyer in the case, the request would not be entertained as her signature is missing from the form. However, Azima would be able to still join the defence team once a complete form is re-submitted, Judge Shafiu said.

With the defense informing the court that they do not wish to proceed with the hearing in Azima's absence, Judge Shafiu adjourned today's proceedings and rescheduled the hearing for next Sunday. The judge stated that Alhan and his brothers would be required to enter a plea in response to the charges brought against them.

While Alhan was absent from today's hearing, Judge Shafiu said Alhan informed the court of a medical situation which prevented him from appearing in court. However, a medical form would be required as per procedure, the defence was reminded.

In the case, Kings Capitals got all their accounts seized by the bank initially. However, the Civil Court ruled it was unlawful.
