Elections Commission has decided that it will discontinue use of its political party membership portal from January 30 onwards. This has come in the wake of rising number of cases of persons being registered to parties wrongfully.

With the case of Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad (Fitte') being registered to ruling People's National Congress (PNC) without his consent or knowledge coming to light, Elections Commission commenced thorough reviews of administrative work in registering persons to political parties.

In an announcement made yesterday, the Commission announced that as efforts are ongoing to improve the system of registering new members to parties, they will discontinue the use of their 'Simedha' portal which is used for party registration from January 30 onwards.

The commission said that despite this, the service of removing or resigning from political parties will continue to be available through their main portal.

The Elections Commission is now working on setting up the system so that party registrations can only be filled using personal eFaas accounts.

The past six months have seen 300 cases of wrongful registration to parties, the commission said, with the issue becoming exceedingly common.

The recent complains about wrongful registration to parties have come up mostly concerning PNC, which has increased its member numbers from 3000 to 60,000 through wide membership drives.

The party has since admitted that a number of illegitimate forms had been submitted through this process, adding that they do not have the resources to vet the thousands of forms brought in by party activists and supporters.
