Former President Abdulla Yameen has said that he will contest in the 2028 presidential elections if he is not sentenced to jail within these five years.

In an interview with RaajjeTV last night, Yameen responded with 'will i not be jailed?' when the presenter asked if he would run in the 2028 election.

Yameen was earlier sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of money laundering and bribery, a sentence which was earlier annulled by the High Court, which ordered a retrial in the case.

However, the High Court ruling said that new evidence cannot be submitted in the case, which has led to the State appealing this at the Supreme Court. The hearing in the appeal case has been tabled for November 20.

Yameen said that the cases against him are stalled at the moment, and added that if all goes well, there is no reason why he should be sentenced to prison again.

Yameen said that Supreme Court, too, has decided that the State's key witness former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb cannot be accepted as a witness.

He asserted that there is 'no doubt' he would run for presidency in the next election if no further convictions come against him.

Yameen said that his main aims in running for presidency would be reclaiming Chagos, and removal of Indian military personnel.
