Former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shammaan's remand in custody until the end of trial has been appealed at the High Court.

Shammaan was dismissed from his post for using undue influence of his position and was arrested on March 21. When presented at the Criminal Court after his arrest, he was placed in remand in custody for fifteen days.

The Court initially rejected the case, but the panel of judges later revised the decision.

When his first period of remand expired, the Court ruled on April 6 that he be held in custody until the end of trial.

As per the High Court's website, an appeal case against this was submitted last Thursday.

Shammaan was dismissed from his post and arrested under allegations that a bribe of MVR 500,000 was accepted to release an expatriate that had been taken into detention, and that this money was taken to Shammaan's residence.

Police have earlier said that the expatriate who was released after accepting this money is one amongst a group detained from a guesthouse.

They said that three staff of Immigration had met the expatriate on the street after his release and taken the money. The money was then taken to Shammaan's residence, Police said.
