A group of Maldivians have been released on bail after being arrested in Thailand for trying to smuggle banned animal species into the Maldives.
Reportedly, three Maldivian youth were intercepted and arrested by customs officials at the Thailand airport while they were on their way back to the Maldives last Thursday.
Among the species they were trying to smuggle out of Thailand were poisonous spiders, duck eggs, and some other animals.
These species are prohibited from being exported out of Thailand unless with special permission.
Even though the Maldivians have now been released from custody, the Thailand police are still investigating the incident. These individuals will only be allowed to return to the Maldives after the court makes a decision on the matter.
It is believed that the court will issue a ruling on their case within the month.
