Parliament today has approved the appointment of former Chief of Defense Force Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef as Maldives Ambassador to Turkey.

The parliament approved the appointment of Abdul Raheem as the Ambassador to Turkey with a unanimous 82 votes.

Abdul Raheem retired on April 17, once he neared crossing the maximum age allowed for serving as Chief. As per the Armed Forces Act, the maximum age allowed for an individual filling the post of Chief of Defence Force is 60 years.

The government decided to establish an embassy in Turkey for the first time on December 10 last year.

This government has established very close relations with Turkey. The drones currently operated by the armed forces in Maldives have also been procured from Turkey.

In addition, the government has decided to increase import of some staple food varieties and strengthen cooperation in different sectors.
