Male' City Council has contracted Rapid Engineering Solutions to source the equipment and materials needed for the cat facility for MVR 210,036.61.
The cat facility is being built at Hulhumale' Phase 3 (Farukolhufushi area) by the Male' City Council and the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare as a step towards finding a solution to manage the growing stray cat population in the Male' area.
The public have been raising concerns regarding hygiene and spread of diseases through increasing numbers of stray cats on the streets. Animal welfare organizations, meanwhile, have expressed concerns about the high number of cats being abandoned on the streets, making them susceptible to diseases that are spreading amongst the stray cat population.
The 5000 sqft plot of land for the facility was given to the City Council by Housing Development Corporation.
The facility, foundation for which was laid in March, is currently in the finishing stage and due to be ready for use soon.
According to the ministry, the facility will provide all necessary care for the cats. This includes;
- an area to quarantine cats
- a clinic and laboratory
- pharmacy
- shelter
- an area for play
