With rising concern amongst parents, the Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Gahdhoo Council has warned expatriate teachers against overcharging for tuition lessons. The council said that action would be taken against any who continue to do so.

In a statement released last night, the council said that they are receiving multiple complaints about expatriate teachers working at the Atoll School on the island charging unreasonably high rates to conduct tuition lessons.

In response to these complaints, the council, through deliberations with the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and the Ministry of Education, have decided to take action against those who do so.

In the statement, the council noted that it is against laws and regulations for teachers employed at the school to provide private tuition lessons. They said that teachers at the school taking private lessons for some students would prevent them from equitably and effectively teaching all students enrolled in the school.

The statement said, "Names of any teachers who continue to take lessons in whatever manner they want by determining their own salaries and prices will be forwarded to relevant authorities to be taken action against in accordance with the Regulations on Employment of Foreigners in Maldives and the Maldives Immigration Act".
