Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has said that even though they have introduced a smaller 140g tuna can in to the market, households will be provided cases of 48 of the regular 180g tuna cans.
MIFCO said that the 140g tuna can cases are economy pack cases, and are targeted for convenience to households with fewer residents as they will be ideal for one use in such homes. They said that these smaller cans had been introduced as it is inadvisable to store open tuna cans in the fridge.
A case of 48 tuna cans is currently priced between MVR 700 and MVR 800. In consideration of this pricing, distributing cases to 80,000 households for Ramadan would cost MVR 56 million.
MIFCO has earlier said that to meet this demand, they will be producing about 100,000 cans more than usual in the months ahead of Ramadan.
They said that the process will be completed in the coming month, at which point distribution will commence.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced in November last year that tuna can cases will be distributed to households for Ramadan this year, instead of staples.
