The state-funded insurance scheme, Aasandha, recorded an expenditure of MVR 2.14 billion in 2024, according to statistics released by the Finance Ministry.
This figure exceeds the allocated budget of MVR 1.9 billion by seven percent. It also reflects a two percent increase in spending compared to 2023, when Aasandha expenditure stood at MVR 2.11 billion.
In 2013, Aasandha expenses were approximately MVR 1 billion. Over the years, this figure has more than doubled, with healthcare costs steadily increasing. Excluding the Covid-19 pandemic period, healthcare system expenditures continue to rise annually, an issue no government has been able to curb successfully.
World Bank data shows that Aasandha spending grew by 18 percent between 2014 and 2019, while the number of beneficiaries increased by only three percent during the same period.
