Former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath has applied for the Supreme Court judge vacancy.

The seven judge bench of the Supreme Court has a vacancy following the resignation of former Judge HusnuSuood on March 4.

The deadline for application expired at 11am today, with only Nihayath having submitted an application.

Nihayath has previously served as a Civil Court judge. After this, she worked as a Deputy Prosecutor General after her appointment in 2016.

Earlier Nihayath also worked as an Assistant Prosecutor General. Nihayath has previously applied twice for the post of Prosecutor General and High Court judge.

At present, the Supreme Court bench consists of Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir, Judge Ali Rasheed Hussain and Judge Dr Mohamed Ibrahim.

The JSC is currently conducting investigations into judges Mahaz and Azmiralda concerning ethical complaints alleging they influenced Criminal Court judges seeking the release of Dr Azmiralda's husband when he was arrested.

Suood was also earlier under investigation, but he has since handed in his resignation.

Judges Mahaz and Azmiralda are currently on suspension as the Anti Corruption Commission also conducts a probe into the matter.
