Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said today in a social media post that he will not be actively involved in either of the two political parties he founded; Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats.

In light of four individuals who played a key role in forming The Democrats leaving the party to join MDP, Nasheed, in a post on X said that he will not go against any political party.

Describing the MDP as akin to a "son", Nasheed expressed his wish for the party to always remain strong. He also said that The Democrats provided a platform for young people to engage in political activities.

Despite this, he will not actively work with any political party at this time, Nasheed clarified in his statement.

"However, I don’t want to leave the Maldivian political scene completely," Nasheed said.

Nasheed and then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, due to their irreconcilable differences, parted ways ahead of the 2023 presidential elections. The split saw Nasheed form The Democrats in June 2023. However, the party had little success during the first round of the election. The party also failed to secure significant support in the April 2024 parliamentary elections.

Reflecting on his career, Nasheed noted that much of his life was dedicated to establishing a multi-party political system in Maldives. He highlighted competitive political activity as a cornerstone for national development and prosperity, citing increased government revenue, infrastructure growth, and improved social security following the 2008 presidential election as key outcomes.

Now stepping away from active politics, Nasheed serves as the Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF). He relocated to Ghana a year ago to fulfil his responsibilities in the role.
