Police said on Saturday that post-mortem investigation conducted on the body of the woman brutally murdered in August show that she was attacked even after she had passed away.

Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, 22, was found dead in an apartment in Henveiru Sheereenvilla, Male' on the evening of August 6. Referring to the initial post-mortem results, police said it is evident that she had passed away due to the injuries inflicted on her body.

"From the results obtained after sending her body to India to conduct the post mortem, and from the information we collected from the scene of the crime, we can now confidently say that her body was attacked even after she had passed away. This is now an established fact," said Head of Family and Child Protection Unit, Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Basheed.

Ali Shahil, also 22, was arrested at the scene of the crime regarding Shiaau's murder. Police said they now have enough evidence to press and convict him with murder charges.

"The autopsy results received so far shows that Shiaau's injuries were made intentionally. Shiaau passed away due to the injuries received. There is evidence to support this," said Head of Death and Homicide Investigation Unit, Inspector of Police Mohamed Samih.

They said it is important to understand the motive behind cases like this, and while efforts are underway to ascertain it, it has still not been determined.

From the statements made by police in the media briefing made in regard to Shiaau's murder, it is clear Shahil had not been cooperating with the police investigation. He had declined to provide the police with the password to his phone, which had been later accessed with the help of police forensics.

The data extracted from the phone is expected to be available next week. This information will provide additional evidence to identify the motive,” Hassan Saeed said.

Police said they will submit Shiaau's case to the Prosecutor General's Office within the next two weeks, requesting them to press charges.
