The number of employees the government pays salary to is at approximately 44,000 this year, with next year's count including an increase of 6000 employees.

The proposed budget for next year amounts to a total of MVR 57 billion. Twenty five percent of this budget is dedicated to salaries and allowances. Of the total budget, 63 percent is allocated for recurrent expenditure.

The salary allocation of next year is 15 percent higher than that of the current year. Compared to 2023, it is a 30 percent increase. In 2024, the allocation for salaries was at MVR 12 billion.

The total number of State employees is not defined in the budget, but can be calculated through the allocation for Ramadan allowances. Allocation for Ramadan allowances for next year is at MVR 152 million. As each employee is granted MVR 3000 as Ramadan allowance. This amount, too, is a thirteen percent increase from last year.

The budget was proposed to parliament last week. The highest allocation from next year's budget is for housing. This week, parliament will commence debate on the proposed budget.
