A Ghanaian national, Appiah James, has been sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives.

Appiah was arrested in June last year after arriving in Maldives on a Qatar Airways flight.

Customs intelligence had flagged him for further inspection, and scans revealed foreign bodies in his system.

He was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where 108 bullets containing 1,461 grams of cocaine were found in his excrement.

Appiah pleaded guilty to the charges and entered into a plea agreement with the state.

In addition to the prison sentence, Appiah was fined MVR 100,000, which he must pay within 12 months.
