The accusation was made by Ibrahim Waheed, Deputy Chairperson of MDP who said that personal data of individuals nearing the age of 18 is being collected from DNR and that documents are being prepared at PNC office for submission to EC once they turn 18.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan, has denied allegations that he is attempting to recruit individuals under the age of 18 into a political party by collecting their personal information.
The accusation was made by Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey), Deputy Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). In a post on X, Ibrahim said that personal data of individuals nearing the age of 18 is being collected from the Department of National Registration (DNR) and that documents are being prepared at the People’s National Congress (PNC) office for submission to the Elections Commission (EC) once these individuals turn 18. He further alleged that this is being overseen by Minister Ihusan.
Minister Ihusan responded on X, denying the allegations and questioning whether such actions were considered during the MDP government. He said that he had not entertained such an idea, adding that these are baseless accusations.
Ihusan said that Ibrahim's focus should shift to discussing the MDP’s policies rather than spreading baseless rumours.
While public scrutiny has increased over unauthorized political party transfers, the issue escalated after MDP MP Hussain Ziyad (Fittey) was reportedly transferred to the PNC without his knowledge. The form has since been cancelled.
PNC issued a statement admitting to the submission of invalid forms to the EC and said that the party will fully cooperate with the police in the matter.
Over the past six months, the Elections Commission has received 300 complaints of individuals being unknowingly transferred between political parties.
