President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said today women’s full participation is essential in education, healthcare, social services, governance, business and economic activity; sectors crucial to a nation's survival and development.

He highlighted that no country can thrive without the contributions and support of women.

Speaking in a special address to mark International Women’s Day, President Muizzu said that the Maldivian government’s core policy is to expand opportunities for women, strengthen their role in governance, and empower them to become self-sufficient and independent.

He said that Maldivian history portrays women as spirited, hardworking and devoted homemakers who contributed beyond their households.

He described them as pillars of Maldivian society, having safeguarded the nation’s peace and security for generations. Their dedication and participation, he said, had driven national development, adding that Maldivians had always taken great pride in their women.

The President added that women make up the majority of service providers in key sectors such as healthcare and education, which are vital to the country’s future. He also celebrated the achievements of Maldivian female athletes, noting that girls outnumber boys in secondary, higher secondary and university education, with most top-achieving students also female.

He described this as a promising sign for the country’s future.

The president said Islam had played the most significant role in safeguarding women’s rights and elevating their status in society.

He cited Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) teachings on kindness towards mothers and wives and paid tribute to the contributions of the mothers of the believers, the wives of the Prophet, in recognition of International Women’s Day.
