High Court today ruled that Aishath Shadhiya, who was arrested for protesting against Israel near embassies in Maldives, was wrongfully detained for three days.

Shadhiya and Dr Shazra Ibrahim were arrested twice last month for participating in these protests but are currently on conditional release following Criminal Court extending their remand on two occasions.

High Court ruled that Shadhiya was detained on the grounds that she posed a threat to public safety. However, the Criminal Court’s decision did not clearly establish how the decision was reached. The High Court also found it wrongful to detain Shadhiya, despite the evidence presented to support these allegations.

As a result, High Court quashed the Criminal Court's order to remand Shadhiya in custody for three days.

The case was heard by a High Court bench comprising Judges Huzaifa Mohamed, Hassan Shafeeu, and Abdul Maaniu Hussain, with Judge Huzaifa presiding over the case.

While Shadhiya's three day remand order was quashed, she has also appealed against her five day remand order, which is currently pending in High Court.
