With the start of the northeast monsoon, migrating flamingoes are once again travelling through Maldives, visiting the Kulhudhuffushi mangroves.

Kulhudhuffushi mangroves are the first destination of these birds this year. Each year, Maldives sees flocks of flamingoes visiting around this time.

Usually, they visit the mangroves in Shaviyani Funadhoo as well.

Residents gathered near the Kulhudhuffushi mangroves today to capture photos of these colourful birds, which are being widely shared across social media.

According to some residents of the island, five flamingoes flew in this morning. They usually stay about a week before leaving for their next destination.

Although flamingoes were not previously seen in the Maldives, they have been visiting yearly since 2022. Initially, they came to islands in Haa Alif atoll, and later to mangroves in northern islands.

Flamingoes are a protected species in the Maldives, and sale or purchase of these birds is illegal. When flamingoes first visited Maldives, there was an incident where a resident of Haa Alif atoll Baarah captured one of the birds and attempted to sell it. He was duly arrested and fined, with the bird taken into the care of the Environmental Protection Agency.
