The Olhu Hiyaa cat facility in Hulhumale' has been handed over by Male' City Council to Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare on Wednesday, and stray cats are now being transferred to the facility.

The Olhu Hiyaa cat facility - to house and care for cats on Male' streets - was built by Male' City Council. The cabinet later decided to transfer the running of the facility to the ministry as the council had not met some of the necessary SOPs required before opening the facility.

Now, three months after the facility was built, cats are being transferred there.

Animal Welfare Ministry said today that 16 hours after the facility was officially handed over, they had established the resources necessary for the quarantine area. As of now, 15 cats have been housed at the facility.

A ministry official said that at present, cats from specific areas in Male' are being transferred to the facility. Accepting cats from the public will be done at a later date, they said.

At present, the facility has four staff members. These are a veterinarian, and three administrative staff. Additional assistance is currently being provided by volunteers.
