The Temporary Committee today approved an amendment to the General Elections Act to hold parliamentary elections 10 days after the end of Ramadan.

The Elections Commission (EC) earlier announced that this year's parliamentary elections will be held on March 17. However, delaying the election was proposed as the date falls in the first week of Ramadan.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member for Ihavandhoo constituency Mohamed Shifau submitted an amendment to prevent the election from being held during Ramadan. An interim committee was formed to study the matter and held meetings both yesterday and today.

Among the proposed amendments to the law, if the date of the election coincides with the month of Ramadan, the election should be held 10 days after the end of Ramadan. In addition, if the ballot paper has a valid tick mark near the name of the candidate, it will be considered a valid ballot.

The committee approved the proposed amendments to the Act. The report will be sent to the parliament secretariat sometime today, committee chairperson, North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said.
