The Maldives Police Service has said they have no information yet to disclose in connection with the death of Naeema Moosa, who was brutally murdered in Noonu atoll Manadhoo on Friday.
Naeema, who lived alone, was found dead in her home on Friday evening after she had been reported missing earlier that day. She was allegedly found with stab wounds on her body.
After the police took the samples required for the investigation, Naeema's body was buried on the island last Saturday. The police have not provided further details on the case as the investigation is ongoing.
No arrests have been made in the case so far, the police said.
According to sources from the island, Naeema was stabbed in more than 25 places on her body, with severe lacerations on her neck.
The source said Naeema was believed to have been killed on either Wednesday or Thursday, which had been busy nights with a high level of activity as many people from nearby islands had come to Manadhoo on those days due to improved weather.
"That is probably why the police are having difficulty making progress in the case," they said.
According to residents, no one has been charged with the murder yet. There is question among the residents about whether an islander could commit such an atrocity despite any misgivings they might have about the deceased. Therefore, there is also speculation that the alleged murder is linked to foreigners living in Manadhoo. These rumours remain unsubstantiated.
