International Organization of Migration (IOM) and the Government of Japan has gifted medical equipment to be used at Maldives' border control points.

In a ceremony held at the seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) today, the equipment was officially handed over by Japanese Ambassador to Maldives Takeuchi Midori, with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel and MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed accepting them on behalf of the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister said the project would bring sustainable development to the Maldives. He said that this is an important step in the efforts to make Maldives a Fully Developed Nation by 2040.

The Foreign Ministry said that the 'Strengthening Capacity of Border Control for Responding to Infectious Diseases in South West Asia' project would facilitate screenings of tourists with assured health safety mechanisms in place.

They further said that in times where social distancing is necessitated, the system would decrease the necessity for crowding, and as such bring progress to travel and tourism.
