Fitr Zakat will be distributed equally to all those on the poor and needy registry list this year.
Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed on social media said that the decision was made to ensure social justice.
Previously, zakat was distributed within individual islands based on what was collected locally. Under the revised system, each eligible person will receive an equal amount of MVR 4,500.
Minister Shaheem said the changes reflect a shift towards considering the entire country as a single unit for zakat distribution.
So far, MVR 12.4 million has been collected in Fitr zakat.
The exact number of people currently on the poor and needy registry is unclear. However, the Islamic Ministry reported last year that 5,023 people were registered.
