It has come to light that some vehicles brought for the Maldives Police Services' Blue Housing Projects has gone missing. Records show that a total of MVR 3.8 million had been spent by POLCO on procuring 24 vehicles.

Mihaaru News reports that although the CIF price of the vehicles reach MVR 7.4 million, 50 percent of this was granted as duty exemptions.

Duty exemptions come up to MVR 3.5 million. It is a regular occurrence for duty exemptions to be granted on material brought in for important government projects.

However, a source close to the case said that the issue in this case is that many of the vehicles brought in under this duty exemption are not found on the site.

Mihaaru cites a document as showing one crane and two vans were brought in in 2014. Whlie the crane costs MVR 4.3 million, MVR 1 million was granted as duty exemption.

The other vehicles brought are a 1500cc van and a delivery van. The CIF price of these two vans are MVR 1.3 million, with MVR 190,000 of this granted as duty exemption.

In the year 2015, two motorcycles were brought in. While the price of these two motorcycles reach MVR 31,000, MVR 13,000 was cut as duty exemptions.

Then in 2016, a luxury car was also brought in by POLCO. This car was granted MVR 800,000 in duty exemptions.

Again in 2017, a motorcycle, three tower cranes and 14 crane lorries were bought. MVR 1 million was spent on the tower cranes and MVR 100,000 on the 14 crane lorries. The documents received by Mihaaru News do not reveal how the price came to be so low for such a large number of crane lorries.

Some of these vehicles listed were not found at the site of flat construction. The parliament, too, is looking into this matter now, with Police instructed to provide detailed information on this to parliament before February 25.

Meanwhile, the Audit Report has also highlighted that there is corruption involved in POLCO's construction of police flats. The report states that while the flat construction agreement was changed three separate times, MVR 122 million was added to the cost of the project and the deadline for completion pushed to 54 months.
